What It Means to Be a Strong Mum – A Mother’s Day Reflection

By Amanda Allen

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to be a strong mum.

Strength, to me, is not just about physical prowess—it’s about spirit, tenacity, and the ability to endure. It’s in the daily choices, the unseen sacrifices, and the kind of determined power that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.

When I think of a strong mum, I think of my own. Our journey has been challenging…but it is our mother daughter journey!

My mum was (still is) a fierce, unwavering presence—strong-willed, self-reliant, and endlessly resilient. She always got on with the business of life, no matter how tough it got. Intelligent, resourceful, and deeply determined, she faced every hardship head-on, never backing down, never giving in. Her strength has been difficult, a blessing and a curse —but it was unmistakable, forming my own strength, and leaving a lasting mark on those who truly knew her.

And here’s something that speaks volumes about who she is:

My mum started CrossFit at 77 years old. (And guess what I’ve taught her to have before (HOLY COFFEE) and during (GREEN GOODNESS) training???

At an age when most are slowing down, she is always willing to get started again! Showing up to train, to learn, to push herself—without excuses or self-pity. Actually with her signature gleeful grit & madness!!! That choice, that action, speaks louder than any words. It’s proof that strength is ageless. That spirit doesn’t retire. That a strong woman writes her own story, on her own terms, no matter the chapter.

To the Strong Mums

This Mother’s Day, I honour my mum—and all the strong, spirited women like her.

Not just for what they do, but for who they are. For their grit, their grace, their madness under pressure, and their refusal to be anything less than their full, authentic, powerful selves.

Here’s to the mothers who lift more than weights.
The ones who carry us—through life, through storms, through generations.

Wishing you a powerful, grounded, and heartfelt Mother’s Day.
